The benefit of Capsaicin

Aug 12, 2019

Capsaicin is the active ingredient of pepper. Pure capsaicin is a water-soluble, lipophilic, colorless, odorless crystalline or waxy compound. It is irritating to mammals, including humans, which can produce a burning sensation in the mouth. Capsaicin and some of its related compounds are secondary metabolites produced by peppers and may be used for detering herbivores. Generally speaking, birds are not sensitive to capsicum.

Capsaicin

Capsaicin is a component of pepper. The initial preparation method to produce capsaicin is extracting from plant pepper, which is the same as the preparation method of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. With the advent and development of new technologies, plant extracts such as capsaicin are no longer limited to conventional solvent extraction, reflux, extraction and other conventional separation methods, such as supercritical extraction, microwave, macroporous resin. The use of new technologies such as enzyme treatment, strain fermentation, liquid preparation, and membrane separation has significantly improved the separation and purification efficiency of capsaicin.

As a food seasoning, pepper needs some sample processing to make chili sauce. However, when people having these products, the capsaicin undergoes a leaching process while the bioavailability of capsaicin is not high. At the same time, the alkali continues being released in the intestine, stimulating the intestinal wall, which can cause abdominal discomfort, and even cause burning pain in the anus which could induce hemorrhoids. Therefore, the capsaicin as an additive in the food processing process is beneficial to the control of the degree of hotness and the full absorption and utilization of capsaicin.

China is one of the first countries to use pepper as medicine. Chinese medicine pepper is used to treat stomach cold and rheumatism. Modern studies have shown that capsaicin has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anesthetic, and detoxification effects, it's the analgesic effect is equivalent to morphine, but more persistent than morphine. Besides, capsaicin can also inhibit the occurrence of malignant tumors, and also has special effects on the treatment of skin diseases and weight loss.

Studies have found that capsaicin can reduce harmful cholesterol levels by reducing accumulation and accelerating decomposition and excretion. In addition, capsaicin can inhibit the activity of a gene which causes arterial contraction. Arterial contractions result in a decrease in blood flow into the heart and other organs. By inhibiting the activity of this gene, the muscles can relax and expand, thereby increasing blood volume. Studies have found that capsaicin can improve a range of factors related to heart and vascular health.

In the animal experiment, the research team found that the main component of capsaicin promotes muscle growth and inhibits muscle atrophy. Researchers believe these findings may help develop drugs that treat muscle atrophy. It is necessary to confirm the safety of capsaicin and to develop a new muscle atrophy treatment with capsaicin after confirming safety.

However, people are not recommended to have overdose chili. People must be aware that peppers are not a substitute for prescription drugs which have been clinically proven.

As a repellent, capsaicin has a strong driving effect and does not kill marine life, which has obvious ecological benefits.
